Betta Fish Care – Four Top Tips For Your Betta Fish Tank
It’s quite easy to look after better fish. However most people still get it wrong, but it is easy if you have the correct knowledge. Here are four top tips that should help you set up your betta fish tank.
No.1 – Tank Size
You don’t need a huge tank to keep your betta fish in. The correct size to get is a 20 litre tank that comes complete with a lid. This will be ample for your betta fish. 20 litre tanks can cost as little as $40. Give it a good rinse out with warm water after you get it home. Whatever you do don’t use boiling water as this will break the glass. Never use any soap to clean the tank. Once you’ve cleaned it fill it with water up to about 2 inch (6 cm) below the top. Leave your tank for a few hours to let the water get to room temperature.
No.2 – Extras
Lets add any extras you may have purchased like gravel, plants and a filter. Try to use smooth gravel as this won’t shred your betta fishes fins as they glide around the bottom of the tank. Make sure to wash through your gravel before you add it to your tank. This should remove all the small bits of dust and debris. Empty it into a large sieve and rinse it under cold running water. Choose plants that aren’t rough or bulky as these can also damage your bettas slight fins. Leave the tank to settle again before you add your filter.
No.3 – Acquaint Your Fish
Now is the time to add your fish into the tank. Leave your fish in the bag in which he came from the pet shop and put that bag into the water. Leave it for an hour or so so that the water in the bag reaches the same temperature as the water in your tank. Then angle the bag underwater so your betta fish slides out into his new tank.
No.4 – Cleaning The Water
Your new tank filter will keep your water clean. As an extra measure remove a litre or two of old water and replace with clean water every three days. This should keep the water in tip top condition.
